He’s one of the no-names at Ohio State University looking to make a name.

That chance will come soon enough.

Brian Rolle is one of the up-and-comers with the Buckeyes. The junior from Immokalee High School is making a strong push to be a starting linebacker.

With former stars A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and James Laurinaitis in the NFL, it’ll be up to Rolle and others to continue the high standards in Columbus.

“We speak of no brain, no name, no worries,” Rolle said. “It’s a bunch of guys who are left. The big-name guys are gone. You don’t have this or that. Nobody has a name. So we have a mindset we’ve developed where we’re going to be greater than certain individuals.”

Ohio State has three consecutive losses in Bowl Championship Series bowl games – including 2006 and 2007 for the national title. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 6 in the USA Today coaches’ preseason Top 25.

On Sept. 12, they’ll have a chance to make an early statement when No. 4 USC comes to town. Over the past few years, the Trojans have toyed with Big Ten teams and Ohio State is no exception.

When the Buckeyes went to Los Angeles last September, they were embarrassed 35-3.

“We got a feel for them,” Rolle said of the Trojans. “Still, it’s no excuse to get beat 35-3. Now we know how they play.

“I’ll argue this to death, but people will be shocked after that game.”

Versatile enough to play different linebacker positions, the 5-foot-11, 223-pounder is getting a lot of repetitions this fall in the middle.

Rolle felt he started to make a breakthrough during practices last December leading up to the Fiesta Bowl. He backed that effort up with his April performances.
