By: John Cupps — YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Ohio State recruit Jamel Turner, who signed a letter of intent in February to play football for the Buckeyes, was shot while riding in the vehicle of a man who served prison time for drug and gun crimes. The shooting took place Friday night and Turner, ranked as one of the best high school linebackers in the nation, was shot in his ankle and hip.
The driver, 32-year-old Ramses Terry was shot in the hand. An article 0n the Cleveland Plain Dealer website notes that according to Mahoning County court records, Terry has been arrested several times for drug and gun crimes. In March 2005, he pled guilty to possession of cocaine and carrying a concealed weapon and was sentenced to two years in prison.
According to a report from the Youngstown Police Department, authorities found two handguns and two baggies that appeared to contain marijuana after searching the black Chevy Blazer.
According to various reports, Turner’s injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
Another passenger in the vehicle, Jamel’s twin brother Jamal, was not injured.
Shelly Poe, spokeswoman for Ohio State, said the university is “still gathering information on the situation” and does “not have any statement at this time.”
