B:y MATT MARKEY (ToledoBlade.com) — COLUMBUS – A crowd is a bad thing if you are seventh in line at the post office and it is five minutes before closing time. A crowd is also a bad thing if they have just 15 iPads at Best Buy, and you are the 27th person through the door at opening.
On the contrary, a crowd is a good thing if you are a football coach taking inventory of your offensive linemen. Ohio State has a horde of talented and capable players battling it out this spring for the five positions on the line, and even the normally stoic and guarded Jim Bollman, the Buckeyes’ offensive line coach, has trouble hiding the wonderful predicament his cache of linemen presents.
“It’s evident that there are a lot of guys who have some experience – seven to be specific,” Bollman said after a recent Ohio State practice. “And then you add a couple guys that we redshirted who look like they have some potential. Yeah, we could have a chance, barring injury and unforeseen circumstances, to have a little depth.”
The Buckeyes have seven of their top nine offensive linemen from last year’s outright Big Ten championship team returning. They lost only the versatile Jim Cordle and Andrew Moses to graduation. Despite battling injuries, Cordle started eight games last season, including the last six at the critical left tackle, while Moses made one start and backed up a couple of positions.
As Bollman starts to inventory his extensive collection of personnel, he has essentially four incumbents at the head of the class. Michael Brewster at center and Bryant Browning at right guard both started all 13 games for the Buckeyes in 2009, when Ohio State went 11-2 and claimed the Rose Bowl championship.
Justin Boren, who transferred to Ohio State from Michigan two years ago, missed one game last season because of injury and made 12 starts at left guard. J.B. Shugarts had 10 starts at right tackle, while Andrew Miller, Mike Adams, and Marcus Hall all played at left tackle…..
