COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State and Toledo passed the lead back and forth on Wednesday at Bill Davis Stadium. In the end, the Buckeyes pulled out a 4-3 victory over Rockets (13-9).
There were six lead changes in the game. Ohio State (14-7) finally managed to stay on top after a strong eighth inning. After Michael Stephens doubled the game was tied when Ryan Dew came to the plate against reliever Matt Suschak with one out and a runner on second. He singled scoring Stephens from second, which gave the Buckeyes the lead for good.
Dan Sherwood had a good game at the plate for the Rockets. He went 1-for-4, scored one run and drove in one run. Sherwood homered in the second inning.
Reliever Eric Best got the victory for Ohio State. He allowed no runs over two innings. The senior pitcher struck out two, gave up no walks and surrendered no hits.
Ohio State scored in three innings to claim the victory. The Buckeyes scored one run in the first, one run in the third and two runs in the eighth. In the first, Cody Umbright gave up one run on a double by Dan Burkhart. In the third inning Zach Hurley came home on an error.
Suschak took the loss for Toledo. He went one inning, gave up one walk, struck out none, and allowed two runs.
Toledo got things going in the second, third and sixth innings. The game was tied in the third inning when Tim Krofcheck came to the plate against junior Dean Wolosiansky with one out and nobody on base, and knocked a solo-shot out of the park.
After Joe Corfman singled in the sixth, the game was tied when Matt Delewski came to the plate against reliever Cole Brown with one out and a runner on third. He flew out scoring Corfman from third.
Ohio State closer Drew Rucinski got the final three outs to pick up the save.
Ohio State’s next game is on Friday, April 2 at Northwestern.
