By: MATT MARKEY (Toledo Blade) — COLUMBUS – For any commander, those guys guarding the perimeter are critically important to the entire operation. They are the sentries out on the frontier, essentially alone on an island.
In football, that’s the cornerbacks. They are the one man to beat for offenses attempting to strike quickly and take the least-impeded route to the end zone.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has put his trust in seniors Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence to protect the outer limits of the field for the Buckeyes’ defense. Chekwa has played in all 39 games in his Ohio State career, while Torrence has appeared in 33.

Chekwa (6-foot-0, 190 pounds) is a fifth-year player from Clermont, Fla., who was part of the Big Ten champion 400-meter relay team in the 2009 outdoor track season. An accounting major, Chekwa earned Big Ten all-academic teams honors in his sophomore year and last season was named All-Big Ten honorable mention for his play on the field when the Buckeyes won a fifth straight conference title…..
