Ohio State football might finally have that confidence, that edge and that tenacity. While all of the talk about the SEC’s superiority in college football focuses on speed and athleticism, what really matters more than anything else is attitude.
For the past few years, the Buckeyes have lacked the outspoken leaders that can fire up an entire team. OSU reached consecutive title games because of an abundance of talent on the roster. The difference between the eventual champions and the scrutinized Buckeyes wasn’t just athleticism, it was raw emotion and hunger.
OSU didn’t strike fear into opponents then. That’s partly a reflection of the coaching style that Jim Tressel employs. This team has needed someone who can offer the fiery version of Tressel’s calm, eloquent manner.
OSU finally has that ruthless leader. And the scary part is, he’s only a sophomore. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s fierce passion offsets Tressel’s relaxed composure to a tee.
During spring practices, Pryor encouraged several of the team’s seniors to act as OSU’s leaders. But from day one of the offseason, he claimed the offense as his group.
“That’s my offense. I’m going to run it, and that’s just how that’s going to be,” he said.
