It was one of those games you had to see to believe — and even then you had to rub your eyes.

Florida State’s offense erupted for multiple team and NCAA records to coast into the super regionals on the heels of an astounding 37-6 pounding of Ohio State in the final game of the Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium on Sunday.

Those 37 runs set three records — a school record, a school record in an NCAA tournament game and an NCAA tournament record — on a day when FSU (45-16) set 10 other records and tied two. (See chart on the right of the page.)

“I’ve been blessed to be here for 35 years and I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like that,” FSU coach Mike Martin said. “It was just a game that you look at our young men, with what was at stake, and you give them the credit because that’s where it’s most deserved.”

FSU scored eight runs in the first inning and had its first nine players reach safely before Tyler Holt grounded into a double play. The Seminoles never looked back — and actually continued to look forward, adding three runs in the second and nine more in the third in taking a 20-0 lead into the fourth inning.

FSU had four batters pick up their fourth at-bat before Ohio State’s No. 9 hitter Matt Streng even stepped to the plate.

“There’s definitely truth that hitting is contagious. … Everyone was hitting and it just catches on,” said Cardullo, who was one of 10 FSU players to have a multi-hit game and one of six FSU players named to the All-Regional team.

Martin started emptying his bench in the fifth inning, even pinch-hitting freshman pitcher Hunter Scantling. FSU still scored 11 runs in the fifth and added five more before the final out was made. FSU played 19 players with online pharmacy without a prescription 17 getting plate appearances.

“We were sitting there in the fourth inning and I knew we were going to a super regional,” Martin said. “There’s only one other time (in my career) in the third or fourth inning that I’ve said to myself, ‘We’re going to a super regional.’”

As can be expected, the lopsided result left Ohio State coach Bob Todd a little numb after the game. To his credit, he attended a post-game interview session with the media. But there wasn’t much he could say about Sunday’s game.

“Everything that they did was right and everything that we did was wrong,” Todd said. “It was almost like an intra-squad game.”

The Seminoles next play Arkansas in the super regional this weekend with the site of that best-of-three series still to be determined.

The NCAA baseball committee will announce tonight at 11 the host site.
