Oregon and Ohio State each enjoyed great college football seasons. I did, too.

That’s what you do when you’re an out-of-work news veteran; you reach into your bag of tricks and re-visit that great idea you had when you finished college 15 years ago. You launch a Web site, call it onegreatseason.com, then spend an entire season on the road, covering college football.

I hit up 15 big games over 15 weeks, a completely independent, one-man band. I planned — and unfortunately, paid for — all my travel, coordinated with athletic departments, pitched my project to local media and begged schools for game-day credentials and other access.

Yes, it was fun. It was a lot of fun. Especially eating out almost every night in Baton Rouge the week of the L.S.U.-Florida game. And being invited to the tailgate parties of strangers who found me after hearing about my project on local sports talk radio.

But a funny thing happened on the way back to Brooklyn. I became a college football expert! Sure I can tell you who has the prettiest cheerleaders — cough — T.C.U. cough — but I can also pick the winner of the one New Year’s Day bowl game you won’t want to miss.

Hide the Blackberry at about 4:30 p.m. Friday and flip on the Rose Bowl between those Pac 10-champion Ducks and the Big Ten-champion Buckeyes.

Oregon’s multiple, dangerous and generally hectic offense is led by super-cool junior quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. When bruising running back LeGarrette Blount was suspended for punching a Boise State player after the Ducks’ season-opening loss, Masoli carried the offense while speedy freshman LaMichael James adjusted to his new role as the featured back.
