Alex Wimmers pitched seven innings of one-run ball, and Ohio State used three home runs to bash their way to an 11-1 victory over the Northwestern buying prescription drugs Wildcats Friday at Rocky Miller Park.
The 2010 home opener proved problematic from the start as Wildcats starter Francis Brooke (3-2) would give up four runs in the first inning off of a series of very hard hit balls by the Buckeyes (15-7, 1-0), including a Zach Hurley solo home run.
Manager Paul Stevens would have seen enough, going to reliever David Jensen to start the second. While Jensen would give up seven runs, including a Ryan Dew three-run homer in the fifth inning, he would give the Wildcats eight much-needed innings of relief out of the bullpen.
Contrast this with Alex Wimmers, now 6-0 on the season, who stymied Northwestern (6-19, 0-1) with an array of pitches over seven innings in a performance that might best be described as dominant. The Wildcats only serious threat was in the second inning, when Chris Lashmet would hit an RBI triple, giving them a runner on third, with no one out.
But Wimmers would bear down, striking out Alex Seyferth, and forcing the next two batters to pop out to end the inning.
The teams will regroup for the second games of the series Saturday at 1:00 CT.
