The arrest Thursday buying prescription drugs online without a prescription of star OSU recruit Jaamal Berry on felony marijuana possession isn’t the first time he has had a brush with the law. Although the marijuana charge is much more serious, Berry was just 16 years old when on December 23, 2006, the Palmetto High School player was arrested and charged with ”loitering or prowling”. No further information is available regarding that case, as juvenile records are not availble for the general public to review. It is unsure how or if the 2006 case will have any impact on the prosecution of Thursday’s drug charge.
According to a Miami-Dade Police Department report, at around midnight Miami-Dade police preformed a stop of a silver Nissan Altima near the intersection of Southwest 120th Street and SW 117th Avenue for running a stop light. Officers observed what was believed to be a bag of marijuana in the football star’s backseat. The bag was said to have contained about 28 grams of marijuana, the report said.
Berry told police, according to the report, that he had purchased the drugs an about an hour earlier and he had planned to smoke the pot with friends. After he was arrested, Berry was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he was later released on a $5,000 surety bond.
According to the Miami-Dade County Clerk of Courts website, Berry’s case is F-09-019391 is to appear in court on July 2 before Judge Rosa Rodriguez at 9am in the REGJB – Justice Building.
Ohio State football spokeswoman Shelly Poe said Friday coaches were reviewing Berry’s arrest and there had been no change in his status.
