Junior center Dallas Lauderdale of Solon will miss the start of Ohio State’s basketball season after breaking a bone in his right hand during a workout Monday. He is scheduled to have surgery Wednesday and miss four to six weeks. The start of the regular season is three weeks and six days away, with the Buckeyes opening against Alcorn State on Nov. 9.

That will leave a sizeable hole in the middle of the Buckeyes’ plans. Ohio State is expected to put four wing players and no true point guard in the starting lineup with Evan Turner, David Lighty, William Buford and Jon Diebler. But someone needs to hold down the lane, and that player is the 6-foot-8 Lauderdale, especially since 7-footer B.J. Mullens left for the NBA after his freshman season.

In Lauderdale’s absence, the Buckeyes will have 7-foot transfer Zisis Sarikopoulos and 6-9 senior Kyle Madsen inside. Or they can go very small with five wing players and Lighty as the biggest player on the court.

If Lauderdale takes six weeks to return to action, he would miss the first four games of the season, including the Buckeyes’ trip to New York to face North Carolina and either Syracuse or California in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. The North Carolina game is five weeks and two days away.
