I think Ohio State is in for a big win.
Or least the Buckeyes, 19-point favorites, need to be.
At 4-0, Minnesota is just good enough to keep the Buckeyes’ attention. And that’s a good thing for OSU fans.
“I think you can just see they’re flying around, they’re hitting guys, they have a fire underneath them, they’re running around and hitting people,” OSU left tackle Alex Boone said this week. “Last year when we watched them, it was kind of like, ‘Oh, it’s Minnesota.’ This year, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, it’s Minnesota!’
“It looks like they changed their program around. They’re playing a lot harder.”
At 4-0, the Gophers have played an easy schedule, yet it has included some decent wins. Beyond 1-2 Northern Illinois and I-AA team Montana State, Minnesota defeated by 25 a Bowling Green team that beat Pitt and hung with Boise State. And Florida Atlantic stayed much closer to Michigan State (17-0) than it did to Minnesota (37-3).
It’s not a team that’s as simple to look past as a year ago. But there’s still a difference in talent that the Gophers can’t match. With Terrelle Pryor and Beanie Wells together in the backfield, Jim Tressel yelling at the offensive line, the defensive line making changes and the linebackers playing more aggressively, it’s time for the Buckeyes to hang a 40-point win on a conference foe. Something along the lines of last year’s 58-7 pounding of Northwestern in the Big Ten opener would work.
Going to Wisconsin for a primetime game next week, I think Ohio State could still use that type of reassurance. If Minnesota hangs around and the game is tight going into the fourth quarter, as it was with Ohio and Troy, there will be real reasons for Ohio State fans to fear that Wisconsin trip.
If the Buckeyes work out some kinks in a walloping, they can once again feel like a Big Ten favorite heading to Madison.
