By: John Kampf (News-Herald.com) — Having opportunity knock on his door has never been an issue for Taurian Washington.
Successfully answering the knock? Now that’s been the problem.
Consider how rosy things started for the product of St. Mary’s High School in Orchard Lake, Mich. The first pass he ever caught at Ohio State as a freshman in 2007 went for 37 yards and a touchdown from Antonio Henton, part of a 38-6 win over Youngstown State.
No one — not even Washington himself — would have imagined at that point that he would only have two more catches over the next 38 games heading into his senior season.
But the 6-foot-1, 181-pounder is ready to leave all that behind him. With last year’s No. 3 receiver, Duron Carter, held out of spring practice for academic reasons, Washington is doing everything he can to earn consistent and considerable playing time for the Buckeyes and cap his career at Ohio State the way he wants to cap it.
“I’m very energized,” Washington said. “It’s not the first time I’ve been in the spring, running with the first group. I’m just basically trying to maintain and do as much Propecia as possible to help my teammates and do the best I can do.”
Last spring started much like this spring, with Washington flashing his athleticism and apparently grabbing a starting position with a four-catch, 92-yard performance in the spring game. But he had a few drops in the season-opener against Navy and never seemed to recover, with Carter emerging as the No. 3 receiver alongside starters DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher.
“Once I had a couple drops, I kind of got down on myself,” Washington said.
Washington is again having another strong spring showing. This weekend’s jersey scrimmage and next weekend’s spring game could go a long way toward Washington solidifying his spot as a reliable receiver for the Buckeyes.
“He keeps getting better,” said OSU receivers coach and assistant head coach Darrell Hazell. “I have a lot of respect for him. He’s done a nice job. I hope he’ll be that guy to give us some support.”
Hazell acknowledged some dropped passes and in-game adversity have been a bugaboo for Washington.
“I think he’s got to work through some of those things, and I think he has,” Hazell said. “He just has to make sure he keeps improving every single day.”
Fellow receivers Sanzenbacher and Posey can attest that effort is not a problem………
