By: Doug Lesmerises (Cleveland Plain Dealer) — COLUMBUS, Ohio — Does Thaddeus Gibson want to remind people of a former No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft? The draft slot is a dream, but it might be best if any other comparisons stop there. At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this Generic viagra whithout prescription week, Gibson will take his first step toward the same position change that former Ohio State star Vernon Gholston made two years ago, moving from a defensive end in college to a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. Gibson would love to jump into the first round with a great combine, but he won’t be getting to No. 6.
Yet he should hear Gholston’s name a few times.
“I think it’s human nature,” Brad Cicala, Gibson’s Columbus-based agent, said. “People are going to make comparisons when they see guys with the same uniform, the same body type and that same position. But I think teams will look beyond that and see that Thaddeus is a different football player than Vernon Gholston.”
Gibson, a former Euclid High star, took over his starting defensive job at Ohio State two seasons ago after Gholston was taken in the first round by the New York Jets as a pass-rusher who looked like a body builder. Gholston burnished his reputation with great combine numbers. But in two seasons in the NFL, the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder hasn’t recorded a sack or earned a starting job and has been viewed as a disappointment, one anonymous teammate questioning his passion for football.
“People will question Gibson a lot about his intensity and his fire for the game. They’ll go the extra mile with that as it relates to Gholston,” Sports Illustrated draft analyst Tony Pauline said.
Unlike other positions at some schools — Pauline mentioned Florida receivers who turned into pro busts — NFL teams shouldn’t worry that the success of Gholston or Gibson at Ohio State came only because of a certain system or scheme. Gibson’s raw numbers last season weren’t stunning.
At 6-2 and about 250 pounds, Gibson wasn’t the sack monster Gholston was with the Buckeyes. Gholston finished with a school-record 14 as a senior and 22.5 in his career. Gibson had four sacks this season and 10 in his career.
But passion isn’t a question with Gibson. He career turning point came after he stormed out of a practice his second season over playing time, then found better ways to channel his energy. While Gholston is best remembered for his startling sacks, Gibson’s best play might have been his last, in what was the most underrated moment of Ohio State’s Rose Bowl win over Oregon, one that showed off his speed and agility.
Down nine points with just over five minutes to play, the……
