Quarterback Terrelle Pryor was the first pick today in the team’s annual draft for Ohio State’s spring game. The team scrimmage, featuring four 11-minute quarters, will be played Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium. In a mild surprise, Kenny Guiton was then picked next, meaning he’ll be the lead quarterback for the Gray team, backed up by fourth-stringer Justin Siems, while Pryor and Joe Bauserman lead the Scarlet team.
The seniors and assistant coaches are divided into two teams for the draft and then select the rest of the rosters, going one position at a time. The most interesting revelations come from the order of selections within each position, like Guiton going ahead of Bauserman.
Maybe Guiton has friends on the Gray team, or maybe the players liked what they saw this spring. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said something cheap Acomplia about the decisions that 20-year-olds make, indicating that Guiton probably hasn’t passed Bauserman on the depth chart that matters.
Other interesting choices today:
* Nate Oliver ahead of Orhian Johnson at safety. Johnson is a starter right now, while Oliver is a backup who has been working with the first team as a nickelback.
* Redshirt freshman Dominic Clarke ahead of Donnie Evege at corner. With Chimdi Chekwa and Travis Howard injured this spring, Evege has been working with the first team.
* With senior Brandon Saine assigned to a team, the order of selection of running backs behind him was Dan Herron, Jordan Hall, Carlos Hyde, Jermil Martin and Jaamal Berry. It was Berry who looked good in the jersey scrimmage on Saturday, but he also turned his ankle in that game and that may have influenced the draft order.
* The only major players declared out for the spring game are safety Tyler Moeller, linebacker Andrew Sweat and cornerback Travis Howard. Several other players who have been limited in practice, like Saine, Chekwa and Hyde, were listed as healthy enough to play, though Tressel seemed surprised by the idea Chekwa may go.
Here are the possible starting lineups, given the rosters for the game. Seeing that the Scarlet might have the three best defensive players – Cameron Heyward, Ross Homan and John Simon – as well as Terrelle Pryor at quarterback, they might have the edge.
The Gray has the better offensive line with Andrew Miller, Justin Boren, Mike Brewster and J.B. Shugarts and deeper running backs with Brandon Saine, Dan Herron, Carlos Hyde and Jaamal Berry.
The key is how much Pryor plays and whether he is full-go or whether his contact is limited. Jim Tressel was cryptic on both counts.
