By: Todd Porter (CantonRep.com) — As Jim Tressel discussed his 2010 recruiting class Wednesday, it wasn’t a secret he was still waiting on one more player.
Eighteen top high school seniors were in hand, but Tressel said 19 would be perfect. As Tressel spoke, though, the odds got slimmer the nation’s top-rated offensive lineman and maybe the top overall recruit would choose Ohio State.
Then, Seantrel Henderson, a 6-foot-8, 305-pound brickhouse of a left tackle from Cretin-Derham in St. Paul, Minn., chose Southern Cal on national TV.
Don’t believe everything you see.
Henderson’s father told the New York Times his son never signed a letter of intent to go to USC. Instead, Henderson is waiting until the outcome of a meeting between the Trojans and the NCAA infractions committee later this month to see if the program is sanctioned because of the Reggie Bush investigation and other matters.
“As far as (Southern Cal Head Coach Lane Kiffin) been informed … there shouldn’t be anything wrong because there was no knowledge of anything going on by the staff,” Henderson’s father, Sean, told the Times.
USC assistant Ed Orgeron, a former head coach at Ole Miss and one of the best recruiters in the nation, recruited Henderson. But Orgeron may have violated NCAA rules recently by communicating with recruits during a dead time. Kiffin’s coaching staff at Tennessee, which included Orgeron, had six secondary violations in his one year in Knoxville.
Henderson’s mother, Bree Jasper, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune her son was “definitely going to USC.” But if USC’s football program is sanctioned, Henderson may reconsider. He has until April 1 to sign with a school.
Tressel has been in this situation before. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor took an extended amount of time before signing with Ohio State. Pryor sent Henderson a text message on signing day making one final push for the Buckeyes because Pryor “needs more linemen.”
Tressel may have ground to make up with the Hendersons……
