PHOENIX – Texas coach Mack Brown was critical Monday of a New York Times story which detailed the recruiting of prize defensive tackle Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin.
McFarland chose Oklahoma over Texas, orally committing on Christmas Day. While Brown declined any comment about McFarland and his family, he questioned the fairness of the reporting.

“One-sided stories usually don’t make it when sources aren’t checked on the other side,” Brown said after Texas landed in Phoenix in preparation for the Jan. 5 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State. “The story has absolutely no credibility with me because the writer did the same thing exactly last year, and it’s obvious he has an agenda, in my mind, against Texas.”

The reporter, Thayer Evans, chronicled California running back Darrell Scott, who eventually chose Colorado over Texas at the 11th hour.

“The article speaks for itself,” Evans wrote in an e-mail response. “We will continue to follow the story.”

In his story on McFarland, Evans detailed a wild party hosted by Texas fans in Dallas, which McFarland attended. McFarland later told Rivals.com that the party account had been “spiced up” for a class paper.

McFarland’s mother, Kashemeyia Adams, said she was offered an interest-free loan if her son were to attend Texas, although the offer did not come from a representative of the athletic department.

Brown and Texas athletic spokesman John Bianco said they were not contacted by the Times for comment before publication.

Asked if he had any knowledge of possible recruiting improprieties, Brown canada pharmacy answered: “Absolutely not. We encourage the NCAA to check out every player we’re recruiting every year. We call them and ask them, too. We welcome them.”

Brown seemed ready to move ahead to bowl preparation.

“If I worried about everything bad written about me in my life, I’d never sleep,” Brown said.

Two QBs at once: Ohio State coach Jim Tressel confirmed a Columbus Dispatch report that the Buckeyes were considering a package that would use starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor and senior backup Todd Boeckman at the same time.

Brown said that wouldn’t affect the Longhorns’ preparation. Texas tried Colt McCoy with backup John Chiles early in the season before abandoning it.

“I hope it works as good for them as it did for us,” Brown said.

Briefly: Brown said Texas was as healthy as it has been since the season opener. … Star tailback Chris “Beanie” Wells was among the Ohio State players temporarily stuck in Columbus for plane maintenance.
