Brace yourselves, Buckeye Nation. We might soon see yet another great quarterback gracing the beautiful campus of Ohio State University, and this one might be even better than our currently beloved No.2.
I don’t blame you if you have heard of Braxton Miller, a dual-threat quarterback from Huber Heights, who is already rated by Scout.com as the top player in the nation for 2011. Miller, the cousin of former Ohio State receiver Dee Miller (whom I used to use to thrash people on “College Football ’96″ for Sega Genesis, by the way), is a 6-foot, 3-inch, 200-pound freak athlete who is actually a better passer than runner.
He’s exactly the type of guy that colleges covet these days. He can pressure defenses with accurate passing and has the ability to pick up the first down with a smooth, long-striding running style when things go differently than planned. Sound familiar?
While Terrelle Pryor preps for a season in which he’ll enter as a favorite to pick up the Heisman, the kid who could be his eventual replacement will enter his senior year of high school just 60 miles west.
He’s already being touted by all of the college football giants, including Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC, but the Buckeyes look to be the favorite to land the prospect, according to many beat writers and recruiting analysts.
For what it’s worth, Miller clocks a 4.47-second 40 yard dash time, coupled with a 32-inch vertical and a 4.3-second time in the shuttle drill. He seems to be a pretty good kid overall, and he rushed for 18 touchdowns last year while also passing for nine more.
One reason why the Buckeyes might be the favorite to land Miller is because the future at quarterback isn’t really set after order drugs without prescription Pryor leaves. Kenny Guiton looked decent in the Spring Game, but underthrowing passes isn’t really going to get it done at one of the biggest college football juggernauts. It almost seems as if Tressel, who has been recruiting Miller since his freshman year, has put all of his faith in landing the coveted QB. A faithful move like that might just be enough to keep Brax in state for his college education.
What’s really exciting is that, either way, the Buckeyes have already put the wheels in motion for what appears to be the best recruiting class in the Big Ten, according to Bucknuts’ expert Bill Kurelic.
A well-rounded class that includes defensive linemen Steve Miller (Canton), Ken Miller (Toledo) Chase Farris (Elyria) and Michael Bennett (Centerville), defensive backs Jeremy Cash (Plantation, FL) and DerJuan Gambrell (Toledo), four solid offensive linemen, and a top tight end, could become one of the best in the country with the addition of Miller and some of the other highly-touted recruits on the Bucks’ radar.
A key in recruiting Miller might just be landing Springfield linebacker Trey DePriest. A five-star stud linebacker, DePriest likes the Buckeyes as well as Alabama and Michigan. Just like Oden and Conley, these two might just be a package deal.
Recruiting this year has become especially important, because many of the late must-get players in the class of 2010 chose not to come to Columbus, including top tackle Seantrel Henderson, who chose USC over OSU.
Already ranked as the Big Ten favorite with a chance to make the national championship game, it’s soothing to know that Buckeye fans won’t have to worry about many 3-9 or 5-7 records in the near future (it’s been 2,370 days, by the way).
