By Jodie Valade (Cleveland Plain Dealer) — ASHTABULA, Ohio — When the rumors began to change from whispered assumptions to loud declarations, Urban Meyer’s best high-school buddies were dining together over the weekend and talking about the same thing everyone else was — whether Meyer truly was going to be Ohio State’s next head coach.
They made the restaurant change the TV channel to ESPN so they could stay up-to-date in case something new was revealed (it wasn’t), discussed the potential drawbacks to seeing their old pal prowl the Ohio State sidelines (there are none), then someone pulled out a phone and sent a text.
“Hurry up and take that job so we can buy you drinks at the Crow’s Nest!” they wrote.
He didn’t respond, but if nothing else, Meyer knows how everyone back home feels. His friends and all of his hometown Ashtabula is ready for him to return to his home state, take control of the Buckeyes and lead them to the kind of glory that he did at Florida (2005-10), winning two national titles…….
