The Cardinals agreed to terms on a five-year contract with first-round RB Beanie Wells late Friday night. Terms of the deal were not immediately available. One of Wells’ agents, Adam Heller, confirmed the deal Saturday morning and said the fifth year online pharmacy without a prescription was a club option.
Wells’ goal of overtaking second-year pro Tim Hightower for the starting RB job suffered a setback in his first practice, when he rolled his left leg in a collision with teammate Jason Banks. Wells was taken off the field on a cart, and the team indicated it was looking at his left ankle. The seriousness of the injury wasn’t immediately known.
Wells, the 31st overall selection in the 2009 draft, already had some catching up to do in his expected battle for the team’s No. 1 RB job with Hightower. He could not participate in voluntary practices earlier this offseason because classes were still in session at Ohio State.
The 6-1, 228-pounder out of Ohio State earned second-team All-Big Ten honors as a junior in 2008, leading the Buckeyes in rushing with 1,197 yards and eight touchdowns on 207 carries (5.8-yard average). Wells rushed for over 100 yards in all eight games in which he played in ’08, and the Cardinals hope he can provide the offense with a big-play dimension out of the backfield that Hightower has yet to show he can provide.
To make room on the roster for Wells, who missed only two training-camp practices, the Cardinals released TE Alex Shor.
