Pinole Valley grad DeNesha Stallworth scored 13 points and three teammates also hit double figures to lead Cal to a 78-47 win over Southern in the opening round of the Buckeye Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
Rachelle Federico and Layshia Clarendon each added 11 points and Gennifer Brandon had 10 for the Bears (3-1), who advanced to today’s championship against No. 3 Ohio State.
Cal had a hard time finding its rhythm in the first half, shooting 29.4 percent from the field and hitting 57.1 percent of their free throws. Alexis Gray-Lawson provided an early spark for Cal, pulling down five straight defensive rebounds in one stretch and ending the first half with seven. Freshman guard Eliza Pierre had a string of four steals in four consecutive Jaguars possessions in the opening half.
The Jaguars (3-1) missed 14 of their first 15 shots, making 3 of their last six shots of the half to end up 6-for-33 (18 percent).
