By Dan Enright (npnnow.com) — Who knew the bracketologists sequestered on the 15th floor of the Indianapolis Westin Hotel — you know, the selection committee — would after all get it right.

Many Big East partisans expressed disappointment that Round of 32 may very well feature two matchups from the conference that always seems to garner an outsized amount of attention. The Big East consists of 16 teams, and after landing an unprecedented 11 teams into the field of 68 — the most-ever by any conference — the Big East advanced just two of them into the Sweet 16.

Both Connecticut and Marquette beat their brethren to remain alive for the second week of play.

Eleventh-seeded Marquette (22-14) has fought off Xavier, the sixth seed, and a team they had never beaten in their program’s history until this season, third-seeded Syracuse. They will now face North Carolina (28-7), who will almost certainly stamp their heels of tar all over the Golden Eagles’ heroic wings. Let’s face it, Xavier was not a worthy foe, and despite my love for the Orange, Jim Boeheim’s youthful boys were simply not ready to move into the Sweet 16 for a third-straight season.

I’m not that fond of Connecticut, either. Although, I can easily see them ejecting San Diego State, a second-seed, from the bracket. I’ll give the Aztecs (34-2) all the credit in the world for having won their first- and second-ever games in March Madness, however, a double-OT win against a not-so-formidable seventh-seed in Temple just doesn’t shine brightly in my eyes……
