Selling things like Big Ten championship rings and even those gold pants charms that Ohio State players get for beating Michigan is what got Terrelle Pryor and four other players in trouble with the NCAA, earning them five-game suspensions.
Not to mention the disappointment of coach Jim Tressel, who apparently puts a lot more sentimental value on such things.
“I suppose the older you are, the more you understand the difficulty of what’s gone into having a chance to earn those things,” Tressel said at Thursday’s news conference in Columbus.
“Perhaps when you’re younger, it’s not quite as crystal clear. … I don’t know what’s in the minds of a 19-year-old, but it might be, ‘I’m going to win four more of these, so I’m going to help out at home with this one.’ ”
They’re not the only ones. There were a couple more of those Gold Pants, from the 2007 and 2009 games, for sale on eBay for $695.
The seller is an Ohio collector named John — he didn’t want to be indentified — who had lots of other Buckeyes memorabilia listed, too, like a 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $2,695.
He said in a phone interview his items were from players who already were out of school.
