By Adam Rittenberg (ESPN.com) — Ohio State received some good news Wednesday as it learned that the NCAA granted safety Tyler Moeller a sixth year of eligibility.
Moeller, who underwent season-ending surgery in early October to repair a torn pectoral muscle, will return in 2011, bolstering the Buckeyes’ secondary. The NCAA certainly made the right call here after Moeller missed the entire 2009 season with a head injury he suffered as the victim of an assault in July of that year.
Moeller was a dynamic playmaker for Ohio State in the first five games, recording 20 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, an interception and a sack. He’ll start at the nickel safety spot, or “star.”
Ohio State will have to replace three starters in the secondary in safety Jermale Hines and cornerbacks Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence, so Moeller’s return certainly helps.
