BY: JON SPENCER (MansfieldNewsJournal.com) — Terrelle Pryor may be the “straw that stirs the drink” in the Ohio State attack, but if Reggie Jackson, the man who made that phrase part of baseball lore, was his sport’s Mr. October, then Jim Tressel is certainly football’s Mr. November.
By now, in the 12 days since the calendar flipped, you’ve heard all of the pertinent numbers:
Tressel is 26-4 in November in his previous nine seasons as OSU head coach. (The next best marks by Big Ten teams in that stretch are Iowa at 20-11 and Penn State at 19-10.)
The Buckeyes are 15-1 in their past 16 November games, the lone loss coming against unranked Illinois at home in 2007. (And, still, they rebounded into the BCS title game that season.)
The Buckeyes haven’t lost to a ranked team in November since their last loss to archrival Michigan in 2003.Here’s another stat to chew on that I haven’t seen anywhere else this week and puts in even clearer perspective how good Tressel teams are in November: Not only are the Buckeyes 8-1 against archrival Michigan in November (6-1 when the Wolverines are nationally-ranked), but they are also 7-1 against the other nationally-ranked opponents they have faced in this month.That 15-2 mark against their biggest rival and/or Top 25 foes accounts for more than half of the 30 November games the Buckeyes have played under Tressel.
