The Samford Bulldogs hit just two of their first 19 shots from the field — and managed only six points in the first half — en route to a 59-22 loss Saturday to Ohio State.
“Our offense was a weapon of mass destruction,” said Samford coach Jimmy Tillette.
It was the fewest points scored by a Samford team since the Bulldogs lost 35-21 to Auburn on Feb. 19, 1941. Ohio State (3-0) had not held a team to fewer points since a 34-22 win over Wabash on Dec. 14, 1939.
The visiting Bulldogs (3-2) finished shooting just 9 of 48 from the field — 19 percent — and misfired on all but two of their 18 three-point shots.
Samford didn’t get to 10 points until the 14:23 mark of the second half. The crowd in Columbus applauded out of pity.
“For us, there’s three positives,” Tillette said. “We got a check; it didn’t snow so we can get back to warmer weather [in Birmingham, Ala.]; and I don’t have a permanent domicile underneath the bridge on the Olentangy River,” referring to the span just outside the Value City Arena. “So that’s a good point for me.”
