COLUMBUS, Ohio — A former Ohio State football player has been sentenced to five years in prison for shooting two police officers as they approached a home for a drug raid.

Under terms of a plea agreement, 38-year-old Derrick Foster of Columbus pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of felonious assault. Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David W. Fais sentenced him to one year in prison for each officer shot and to three years for firing a weapon through the back door.

Officers John Gillis and Anthony Garrison received non-life threatening injuries in the April shooting.

Foster apologized during the court hearing, saying he still respects police and is a good person. He has said he was gambling at the home and thought it was being robbed.

He was a 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end when he played for the Buckeyes from 1989-92.
