By Joe Reedy (Cincinnati.com) - CINCINNATI — With a limited pool available, the Bengals have once again turned to an Ohio State kicker.

After placing Mike Nugent on injured reserve Monday, the Bengals signed rookie Aaron Pettrey after a tryout Tuesday.

“It’s extremely unfortunate how it happened but I’m happy that I ended up here,” Pettrey said.

Former University of Texas kicker Hunter Lawrence tried out and Shane Andrus, who kicked for the Niners, Bucs and Colts last year, visited but did not try out.

After being undrafted, Pettrey was signed by Carolina and spent a couple months there before being released. He was with Detroit early and training camp and kicked in the first preseason game, missing a 42-yarder and then converting an extra point.

Special teams coach Darrin Simmons had talked a couple times with Pettrey during the draft process and did have an individual workout with him before the draft. This was Pettrey’s first regular-season tryout and it wasn’t exactly done in the most ideal conditions. It rained for most of the day and was windy.

“If you can kick in that you can kick in anything. It can’t get much worse unless it was snowing,” Pettrey said.

Since being released by the Lions, Pettrey has been spending time in Columbus working out at Ohio State’s facilities. He didn’t know until 10 p.m. Sunday night that Nugent was injured until he saw a text message from his former long snapper with the Buckeyes, Jake McQuaide.

Pettrey can empathize a little with Nugent’s situation…..
