BY: JON SPENCER (CentralOhio.com) — You can tell Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel doesn’t have to deal with mole holes or rake leaves left from the fall or repair cracks and chips in his driveway created by a harsh winter.
“I’ve never been around a bad spring,” he declared.

Former Buckeye Brandon Childress used to say the same thing, then largely disappear come August.

I remember watching “Mr. April” do his thing in one those forgettable Scarlet and Gray skirmishes as the player who should have been tabbed Ohio’s Mr. Football over Childress in high school — big “bad” Ben Roethlisberger — was getting drafted in the first round that day by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In other words, being the straw that stirs the drink in April isn’t much to hang your hat on. Remember that if No. 3 receiver candidate Taurian Washington has a breakout performance in Saturday’s spring game. You might want to hold your applause.

If there’s no paint to watch dry and you decide to attend the glorified scrimmage — hey, 90,000 had nothing else to do in 2009 — here’s four questions to think about before players suddenly start switching jerseys, creating havoc for statisticians:

# Does Terrelle Pryor get it?

I’m still not sure. Ohio State’s equally entertaining and exasperating quarterback appeared to have it figured out in the Rose Bowl, especially with Tressel taking the padlock off the playbook. Then came last week’s jersey scrimmage. Pryor wasn’t allowed to get hit, which meant he couldn’t run either, inhibiting some of his effectiveness. But 5-for-15 for 45 yards, allowing for a couple of drops and a nasty wind, isn’t good enough.

Pryor’s college career has reached the midway point. No more talking potential. Does he get it? We won’t get “it” — the answer — until he goes against Miami on Sept. 11. That’s when we’ll find out if he can put together good performances in back-to-back high profile games.

Tailback by committee is inevitable, but is it profitable?

Ohio State’s depth at running back is as good as it’s ever been under Tressel. He went with a tailback committee in 2009, so why would he scrap that prescription drugs without plan now with more backs at his disposal, including a healthy Jaamal Berry and 6-foot-1, 230-pound Carlos Hyde?

Two words why he should: Brandon Saine.

My hands became arthritic from beating the drum for Saine to become the featured back in 2009….
