From the start, it was clear that Terrelle Pryor would serve a defining player in Jim Tressel’s career.
Tressel had coached a Heisman Trophy winner in Troy Smith; had led Ohio State to a national title in his second year in Columbus behind sensational freshman Maurice Clarett; had just reached consecutive national title games after the 2006 and 2007 seasons; and had firmly established Ohio State as the Big Ten’s strongest football program.
But now Tressel, a former quarterback in college and still a quarterback at heart, had reached outside of Ohio’s limits and grabbed the No. 1 recruit in the country. He ripped Pryor out of Penn State territory in western Pennsylvania and stiffarmed new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez in his pursuit of a quarterback ideally suited to the Rodriguez system…..
