Wednesday was the first workout of spring practice for the University of Akron football team, but a hot topic of conversation was about an event six months away.
On Sept. 3, the Zips will open their 2011 season against Ohio State at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
That game normally would not be in the national spotlight, but it will be now because the Buckeyes will be without coach Jim Tressel and six players who will be beginning their suspensions for violating NCAA rules.
Rob Ianello, the Zips’ second-year coach, played the role of diplomat when asked if he was disappointed that Tressel will not be on the opposing sideline.
”It’s his program. His stamp is on it,” Ianello said. ”That won’t take away from the opportunity our team has that Saturday.”
Ianello, who served with Tressel on the board of trustees of the American Football Coaches Association, was just as diplomatic when asked about Tressel’s troubles with the NCAA…….
