ZANESVILLE — Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells was a force for opposing defenses to stop on the football field.
But the former Ohio State running back slowed himself down enough to make a stop in Zanesville and met with Buckeye fanatics at Cardboard Heroes in the Colony Square Mall Wednesday.

The store sold over 100 tickets for the event. Plenty of Ohio State supporters managed their way through the treacherous conditions to get pictures with and autographs from the two-time 1,000-yard rusher.

“I just found about it and had to run to my dad’s store to get $20 to get here,” stated 19-year-old Justin Morgan of Zanesville, who came with a couple of friends. “On our way down here, we got stuck in some snow, but we pushed ourselves out to get down here.”

Kyle Davis, who was with Morgan, was glad Wells came out to give back to his fans.

“I think it’s great he took time out of his schedule. I never thought I would get a chance to meet him,” the 17-year-old Davis stated.

Morgan agreed, “It’s very generous. I see him on TV, but this is awesome. You hardly get chances like this.”

Several parents brought their kids out to see one of the more popular Buckeyes.

Stephanie Hesson of Zanesville surprised her nine-year-old daughter Kaylee, who is a big Ohio State fan, with the trip.

“This is cool. He’s one of my favorite players,” Kaylee said with a big smile on her face.

Stephanie commented seeing athletes like Wells spend time with fans is a rare commodity these days.

“Not a lot of athletes are good enough to do this so this is a good thing,” she said.

Brody Smythe had to earn his trip to the signing. With school closed, the nine-year-old made money shoveling snow, and his mother rewarded him with a chance to meet Wells.

“I was real excited when I heard he was coming,” Smythe said as he teemed in line with anticipation. “I would like to throw a football to him.”

Wells, through his agent, declined interviews with the local media.

A pair of Buckeyes will be at Cardboard Heroes Saturday as James Laurinaitis and Brian Hartline will sign autographs and be available for pictures from 6 to 8 p.m.
