With 5 players serving 5 game suspensions for the Ohio State Buckeyes, including star quarterback Terrelle Pryor, this year’s Big Ten title race could be wide open.
The Buckeyes have finished first or tied for first in each of the last six seasons, but with five key players and head coach Jim Tressell suspended for the first 5 games of the season, the Buckeyes could face some early adversity which they are unaccustomed to. With Iowa losing key starters including star quarterback Ricky Stanzi, and with Wisconsin having quarterback issues of their own, the door could be open, if ever so slightly, for the Nittany Lions to sneak into the title game. But a brutal final 3 games of the season (Nebraska, Ohio State, Wisconsin) will determine where the chips fall for this year’s Penn State football team.
The Nittany Lions have yet to name their starting quarterback. Sophomore Rob Bolden, who still may transfer, and junior Matt McGloin are the top two candidates. After taking over for the injured Bolden, McGloin sparked the Penn State offense last year and guided them to a Capitol One Bowl clash with the Florida Gators but threw 5 interceptions in the Lions loss to the Gators. A game in which Bolden saw no action and fueled his decision to request a transfer from Penn State, which head coach Joe Paterno denied…the saga continues this spring…….
