For all the intrigue and speculation that the analyst do around tourney time, there are few that actually go out on a limb. If you take a look at most of the Final Fours, very few stray far from their seedings.
While SI’s Stewart Mandel isn’t exactly picking a 16 vs. 1 upset, he’s about the only analyst around who’s got the guts to knock Ohio State off of their perch.
He’s got Kentucky having the juice to knock off the consensus No.1.
“In any other region, Ohio State would be my Final Four pick, but the Buckeyes will have the misfortune of running into a No. 4 seed that happens to be more talented, albeit young.”
I wouldn’t be surprised. Big Ten teams seem to find a way to blow it in the tournament. And with as talented as Kentucky is they might be too young and inexperienced to understand the moment and so it won’t affect them.
Of course in his breakdown of the East region he’s had his own reservations about the Mountaineers and their fifth seed.
“The fifth-seeded Mountaineers aren’t nearly the same caliber team as last year’s Final Four squad, relying on their defense to compensate for a lack of reliable scorers.”
