Former Michigan quarterback Steven Threet’s football career ended because he suffered four concussions in college.
On Tuesday, Lloyd Carr, who coached Threet during his redshirt season at U-M, delivered the keynote speech at a “Play Smart: Injury Prevention On and Off the Field” symposium attended by medical experts, coaches, parents and U-M women’s soccer players at the university’s School of Public Health.
Carr, who coached the Wolverines in 1995-2007, said when it comes to traumatic head injuries, particularly concussions in sports, “I’m uneducated.”
But, he added, he is learning more about the issue and pressing for more research and action to deal with it by educating coaches and parents.
“Most of us are not educated as well as we need to be,” Carr said about traumatic head injuries. “Education is the key.”
