BY: KIRKLAND CRAWFORD (Detroit Free Press) — Evan Turner had 20 points and 10 rebounds and William Buford added 17 as No. 11 Michigan State lost to No. 9 Ohio State, 74-67, today at Breslin Center.
Turner rested in the bleachers while the rest of the Buckeyes took shooting practice Saturday night. Turner got a plateful of food — then didn’t eat it — Sunday morning.
“He did a tremendous job of battling through it,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of his star, who leads the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding. “You have to give him a lot of credit for how he played. I thought he was a little bit off there at the beginning. He had some great looks. But there were no legs.”
Durrell Summers led the Spartans with 16 points. Chris Allen scored 11 points and shot 3-for-6 from the three-point line. Draymond Green scored 11 off the bench. Raymar Morgan had nine points and 14 rebounds and Kalin Lucas added nine points and eight assists.
“Disappointed would be a foolish word right now,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “It’s more than that.”
David Lighty had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Buckeyes. Jon Diebler scored 12 and Buford had 10 rebounds.
Michigan State (21-7) is now tied with Ohio State (21-7) for second place in the Big Ten at 11-4. No. 4 Purdue is 11-3 in the conference.
“Our situation was really going to be the same,” Izzo said. “We have to beat Purdue down there, either way.”
