There was quite a stir earlier this week when ESPN cited its Bowl Championship Series guru in reporting that, if the initial standings came out this week, Boise State would be No. 1.

At the same time, Ohio State, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team in both polls, wasn’t even sniffing the top two spots. Fans freaked. How in the world, they said, can we stand for this?

Reminded that the BCS standings change, sometimes dramatically, before the season’s end, they calmed. A little bit.

There’s no question Ohio State controls its own title game hopes, and the only thing helping the Buckeyes will be wins. But there’s something else about the early BCS guesses that could help OSU: The Southeastern Conference looks to be on the outside of the title chase.

Ohio State’s problems with the SEC in championship games have been discussed plenty already. That doesn’t mean other teams would be easier, but there also could be a mental….
