It’s a battle of two of the top teams in the Big Ten and two of the top teams in the nation as the Ohio State Buckeyes host the Purdue Boilermakers.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have done everything they have been called upon to do as they carry the number one ranking into their second week and notched their second win over a top 25 team this past week as well. Thad Matta’s Buckeyes have played the 73rd ranked schedule and it will get tougher over the next few weeks in conference play. Offensively Ohio State is averaging 79 points per game while shooting the lights out at 49.5 percent and grabbing 39.5 offensive rebounds per game. Jared Sullinger has been a difference maker averaging 17.9 points and 10.2 rebounds, William Buford is averaging 13.4 points and 4.1 rebounds, and David Lighty is averaging 12.8 points and 4.0 boards. Defensively Ohio State has put the clamps on the competition as they allow just 57.2 points and the opposition shoot 41.3 percent and the Buckeyes are 18th in defensive rebounding.
The Purdue Boilermakers are nationally ranked and are in second place in the Big Ten and Matt Pinter’s team is looking like a contender. The Boilermakers have played the 35th ranked schedule and they are 4-2 away from home including losing their last two road games. Offensively Purdue is averaging 75 points per game while shooting 45.9 percent from the floor while grabbing 36.4 offensive rebounds per game. JaJuan Johnson is averaging 20.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and E’Twaun Moore is averaging 18.1 points and 5.8 rebounds to lead the Boilers as they try and fill the gap left by Robbie Hummel’s season ending injury. Defensively Purdue is allowing the opposition to score just 59.4 points per game and shoot 40.7 percent.
Ohio State is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven home games against a team with a winning road record, 14-5-1 against the spread in their last 20 Tuesday games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games against a team with a winning record. Purdue is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games following a straight up win, 8-3 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 5-2 against the spread in their last seven Big Ten games. The underdog is 5-1-1 against the spread in the last seven meetings and Ohio State is 12-5-1 against the spread in the last 18 against Purdue.
