By: Jon Spencer (MansfieldNewsJournal.com) — Someday, college athletes throughout America, at least at the well-off schools, may be thanking disgraced Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Even at Ohio State.

It’s no coincidence that talk of extra compensation for athletes or giving actual “cost of attendance” scholarships has intensified in the wake of the tattoos and cash-for-memorabilia scandal involving Pryor and five other Buckeyes.

The ongoing turmoil has already cost coach Jim Tressel his job, hastened Pryor’s departure from campus and threatens to take down one of the NCAA’s biggest cash cows — the OSU football program.

Studies have determined that so-called “full” scholarships actually fall about $3,000 short of covering an athlete’s expenses outside of tuition, fees, books, room and board. They’re left shouldering the load for incidentals like transportation, clothing and other living costs…..
