Even some of Jim Tressel’s supporters are turning on him, which isn’t a good sign as the NCAA considers whether to punish him and the Ohio State football program for sweeping the trinkets-and-tattoos-for-money scandal under the rug.
The latest to jump off the bandwagon is Oregon State president Ed Ray, a former vice president and provost at Ohio State who helped hire Tressel a decade ago. He called the episode “beyond the pale” and “totally unacceptable” in an interview this week with The Oregonian.
Ray is president of the NCAA’s Executive Committee, which oversees rules changes. Translation: He’s a nerd who bores people to death at parties but whose words carry weight.
Ray went on to state that if he were deciding the Tressel case, he would be “a hanging judge.”
He is further quoted as saying: “I’m not a big mercy guy. I’m not a big understander of extenuating circumstances. … I’m kinda old-school. And I think you’re either ethical or you’re not.”
The NCAA, for those just tuning in, is not famous for compassion and understanding when it comes to……
