By: Dan Chalk (OurMidland.com) — Whatever results from the current allegations of NCAA violations by Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel and his program, you won’t see University of Michigan Athletics Director Dave Brandon gloating.
Brandon’s been there, and he knows how it feels.
“I know what it’s like to receive the papers from the NCAA, a notice of allegations and ultimately of violations. I know what that process is like,” Brandon said Monday during a question-and-answer session at an Associated Press Sports Editors dinner in Midland.
“It’s difficult, it’s painful, it’s stressful, and what you don’t need is anybody, particularly a colleague, poking (fun) at you,” said Brandon, who in his first year on the job has seen the U-M football program get placed on three years of probation for NCAA violations committed prior to his tenure. “There are some people out there that did it, and I remember who they are, and I remember what they said — those people who took great glee in the fact that we got ourselves in that kind of situation. Brandon, who became Michigan’s AD in March 2010, talked about a number of subjects over a 45-minute period at the dinner, which was not open to the public.
On the subject of Ohio State, Brandon also talked about new U-M football coach Brady Hoke’s “countdown clock” that counts down the days, hours and minutes until the Wolverines play the Buckeyes on Nov. 26 in Ann Arbor. Ohio State has beaten Michigan seven straight times in the passionate rivalry.
“His first capital request was the countdown clock to count down the seconds before we play Ohio (State),” said Brandon, who played football at U-M under Bo Schembechler in the early 1970s. “Shortly afterward, we got a request for another one for that team that comes from East Lansing (Michigan State). … (Hoke) understands these rivalries; he understands how they define the success of the team.”
Another highlight of Michigan’s schedule this season will come Sept. 10 against Notre Dame and coach Brian Kelly. It will be the first ever night football game at Michigan Stadium, with kickoff at 8 p.m…..
