COLUMBUS, Ohio -It didn’t look good for Dan Herron’s 1,000-yard quest at halftime on Saturday.
The Ohio State Buckeyes led rival Michigan, 24-7, at the break, but Herron came in needing 107 yards to reach the milestone and he ran just five times for minus-1 yards in the first half.
But Herron and the Buckeyes’ running game got going in the second half, when the junior tailback broke loose for 176 yards on 17 carries, including a 33-yard touchdown run and a record-tying 89-yard run.
“The offensive line just made a couple of adjustments and we started running a couple different little plays,” Herron said.
The first half wasn’t really a reflection of Herron’s performance or that of the Buckeyes’ offensive line. The Wolverines’
beleaguered defense - among the worst in the country - sold out against the run on a bright, but blustery day at Ohio Stadium.
“It was a strange game offensively because we kind of led with the pass in the first half and all of a sudden we got a couple of turnovers and we were looking more at leading with the run in the second half,” Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. “We always talk about doing what the team needs and in the first half, we needed to throw it because they were jamming the box full of people. We felt like we could throw the ball.”
