By: Elton Alexander (Cleveland Plain Dealer) — No real movement in the Top 25 poll, other than grudgingly dropping Ohio State in the elite at No. 21, mostly to clear out my voice mail.
The Evan Turner’s could be back off this list by next week after fattening themselves with more cupcakes (Lipscomb, St. Francis, Pa.). Yes, the Buckeyes defeated No. 15 Cal, but that doesn’t say much. The Bears (2-2) will likely have a hand on the exit door when the latest Top 25 poll is released, if they are not dropped out already.
Added Notre Dame, Kansas State and Syracuse to the elite list as well. Nothing earth-shaking there. I was tempted to add New Mexico (5-0) and/or Missouri State (4-0) but they have not had any road tests. A couple of potential Top 25 teams to watch for next week are Arizona State (4-0) and UNLV (3-0). Coach Herb Sendek and his ASU crew will play at Duke on Wednesday and coach Lon Kruger’s Rebels will host Louisville Saturday.
Locally, Cleveland State (3-1) gets a shot at No. 4 Kentucky (4-0) in the Cancun Classic Tuesday night. The Wildcats are already the flavor of the day with freshman guard John Wall. CSU could put a little vinegar in that national flavor if junior guard Norris Cole has anything to say about it.
This is likely the first of several chances at potential Top 25 upsets for the Vikings as they also have games vs. West Virginia, Ohio State and Kansas State around the Christmas holidays.
