Seven Big Ten teams were selected to participate in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin will represent the conference in this year’s tournament.
Ohio State, also the 2011 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament Champion, is the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament and the top seed in the East Region and will start at the Cleveland, Ohio second/third round site. The Buckeyes will face Texas-San Antonio/Alabama State winner from the First Four for their first game while the winner of that will take on the winner of No. 8 George Mason vs. No. 9 Villanova in the second round. Ohio State is making its 23rd appearance in the in the NCAA Tournament and third consecutive. Overall, the Buckeyes have a 34-20 record in the tournament and eight appearances in the Final Four, including a championship in 1960.
Purdue is the No. 3 seed in the Southwest Region and will be in Chicago for its second/third round games. The Boilermakers will take on No. 14 Saint Peter’s with the winner of that game facing the winner of No. 6 Georgetown vs. the USC/VCU winner from the First Four. Purdue’s appearance is the 24th in school history and its fifth consecutive. The Boilers have a 33-24 record in NCAA tournament games as well as two Final Four appearances.
Wisconsin is the No. 4 seed in the Southeast Region and will travel to the Tucson, Ariz second/third round site. First up for the Badgers will be No. 13 Belmont with the second round pitting the winner of that game against the winner of No. 5 Kansas State vs. No. 12 Utah State. Wisconsin will be playing in the tournament for the 17th time and making its 13th straight appearance. The Badgers are 21-15 in their previous trips and have made two Final Four appearances, including winning the 1941 title……
