By Steve DiMeglio (USAToday.com) — COLUMBUS, Ohio — Returning Monday from a long Memorial Day weekend gathering of friends in Detroit, Jackson Mason was in good spirits as he pulled into a parking space on Ohio State’s campus.

Then he heard that football coach Jim Tressel resigned amid mounting turmoil ignited by some of his players receiving improper benefits from a local tattoo-parlor owner.

“Well, that’s just about the worst way to end a Memorial Day weekend,” Mason, a 20-year-old sophomore, said as he tugged on his OSU football t-shirt. “Some of my best memories here have come from being in that Horseshoe. (Tressel) is a great coach, a leader, a winner. I just think he was trying to protect his players and lost control of the situation. … He beat Michigan all the time. He won a national championship. He built a powerhouse here. Hope we stay one.”
