By Justice B. Hill (MSNBC.com) — CLEVELAND - David Lighty came home Sunday. He came back to play in front of his mother, in front of his grandmother, in front of other family members, in front of friends and in front of people who had seen him play at Quicken Loans Arena before — men and women who had watched Lighty play on this floor back in his high-school days.
But none of them had seen David Lighty, a fifth-year senior for Ohio State, play like this.
Not at The Q or anywhere else.
Not in the NCAA Tournament, the most nerve-frizzling time in March Madness: the win-or-go-home phase of the college basketball season.
Home for Lighty would have been a short trip – one that he wasn’t prepared to make just yet. His performance ensured he didn’t have to make that short trip. He had a night he, his family and Buckeye Nation will remember.
Other Buckeyes played well, too. Teams don’t dismantle a determined opponent like George Mason, 98-66, unless they get contributions from everybody in their lineup. And the Buckeyes did. But in dissecting their victory to its core, in finding the reasons behind it, Lighty’s play stands out.
“He was 9 for 10 — 7 for 7 from the 3-point line,” said George Mason guard Cam Long, seemingly in awe of Lighty’s play. “We had him as a likely shooter, but I mean, sometimes when you just have that night, you have that night. And tonight was his.”
