Most Michigan fans will cringe but Ohio State coach Jim Tressel offers hope for Michigan’s Brady Hoke. Their respective rises to their current positions are almost parallel.
For most, Tressel came out of nowhere in 2001. The hot names were Glen Mason, Jon Gruden, who was coaching the Oakland Raiders at the time, Tyrone Willingham and OSU assistant coach Fred Pagac. At the time, no one was expecting Ohio State
to hire a coach from Division I-AA.
So there was Tressel from Youngstown State. People were apprehensive. Some were disappointed at not getting a bigger name.
Ten years later, OSU athletic director Andy Geiger has shown that his judgment was right. Tressel has blown away the Big Ten, leading the Buckeyes to more BCS bowl games than any program in the country, six straight conference titles, two national championship games and one title.
What Tressel shows is that a good coach is a good coach, it does not matter where he comes from. Had Ohio State hired any of the other aforementioned names, they most assuredly would not have had the success Tressel has in the last 10 years. A good coach is……
